Standard Open Guard - Top

Non-Dominant

Standard Open Guard

You are in front of their open guard, where their feet and grips are the obstacle rather than a locked pair of legs. Control the hips before you try to get past the legs, keep your own posture over your base, and move around them rather than through them. Pick a side, commit your weight to it, and do not stop halfway — a pass abandoned in the middle hands the guard straight back.

Advance

Techniques to improve your position — sweeps, transitions, and movements that get you to a better place.

Goals

Basic Knee Cut Entry Awareness

Recognise when the knee cut is available and enter it safely, cutting through until you have chest-to-chest connection.

Passing Footwork Awareness & Toreando Movement Pattern

Move around the legs instead of through them: control the hips, change angle with your feet, and keep your balance as you go.
